Jet Software Technology (JST), was established in the early 2000’s to provide consultancy and software development services with a focus on integrating spatial information and concepts into regular business processes and development cycles.
At the time spatial data and software (GIS) was often considered separate from other business software and managed separately outside of regular IT development. The spatial software industry was dominated by a number of large players with proprietary spatial databases that were clunky to integrate into the mainstream and which were managed by GIS specialists. The potential for integration improved greatly when Oracle released the Oracle Spatial components, enabling spatial data to be treated like any other data in a database. Other database providers have since followed suit and spatial constructs are now readily available in most databases of corporate choice. With this capability came the next set of challenges however. How to understand and make use of the available spatial data and functionality without falling into the traps, especially when integrating into day to day business decision decision systems. Whether they be automated or interactive.
